If your business runs any kind of online advertising, chances are you are using Google Ads, formerly known as Google AdWords.

If you run Display campaigns, your ads can appear across millions of websites, apps, YouTube, and other Google properties. To maximize your reach across all of that inventory, you need to understand which display ad sizes matter, how responsive ads work, and when fixed-size uploaded ads make sense.

For businesses that do not want to manage creative formats, targeting, bidding, and campaign optimization internally, working with an experienced digital advertising partner can simplify the entire process.

Two Ways to Run Google Display Ads

Before getting into specific dimensions, it helps to understand that Google Display campaigns primarily support two approaches: responsive display ads and uploaded display ads.

The difference between them affects how you design your creative and how widely Google can place it.

Responsive Display Ads

Responsive display ads are Google's default Display ad format.

Instead of designing a finished banner in one specific dimension, you upload individual assets such as:

  • Images
  • Logos
  • Headlines
  • Descriptions
  • Videos

Google then combines and resizes those assets to fit available placements across the Display Network.

According to Google's responsive display ad guidance, the system can automatically adjust an ad's size, appearance, and format depending on where it appears.

One set of creative assets can therefore cover significantly more inventory than manually producing individual banners for every supported dimension.

Uploaded Display Ads

Uploaded display ads are banners you create yourself in specific dimensions.

Google supports formats including:

  • JPG
  • PNG
  • GIF
  • HTML5

Because you control the finished creative, uploaded ads are useful when your organization has strict branding requirements or when a campaign requires precise layouts.

The tradeoff is reach. You need to create the individual dimensions you want to serve, and uploaded ads may not qualify for every placement available to responsive display ads.

The Most Common Google Display Ad Sizes

Google supports numerous uploaded display ad dimensions, but several sizes appear much more frequently across desktop and mobile inventory.

According to Google's current display ad size specifications, some of the most important dimensions include:

  • Common Google Display Ad Sizes
    • Medium Rectangle: 300 x 250
    • Large Rectangle: 336 x 280
    • Leaderboard: 728 x 90
    • Large Leaderboard: 970 x 90
    • Wide Skyscraper: 160 x 600
    • Half Page: 300 x 600
    • Mobile Banner: 320 x 50
    • Large Mobile Banner: 320 x 100
  • Google supports additional dimensions, but these provide a strong starting point when producing uploaded banner ads.

    300 x 250 Medium Rectangle

The 300 x 250 medium rectangle is one of the most versatile display ad formats.

It works across desktop and mobile placements and is supported by a large amount of display inventory.

If you can only create a limited number of fixed-size banners, this should generally be near the top of the list.

    336 x 280 Large Rectangle

The 336 x 280 large rectangle provides slightly more space than the 300 x 250 format and is commonly used within desktop content layouts.

    728 x 90 Leaderboard

The 728 x 90 leaderboard is a wide horizontal format commonly placed near the top or within the content of desktop pages.

    300 x 600 Half Page

The 300 x 600 half-page ad gives advertisers significantly more vertical space for branding, imagery, and messaging.

Its larger footprint can make it particularly useful for campaigns where visual impact is important.

    160 x 600 Wide Skyscraper

The 160 x 600 wide skyscraper is designed for vertical sidebar placements on desktop websites.

    320 x 50 Mobile Banner

The 320 x 50 mobile banner is one of Google's core fixed-size options for smartphone inventory.

    320 x 100 Large Mobile Banner

At twice the height of the standard mobile banner, the 320 x 100 large mobile banner provides more room for creative while remaining designed specifically for mobile screens.

Which Google Display Ad Sizes Should You Create First?

If you are creating uploaded display banners and do not want to design every supported dimension immediately, start with a core group that covers common desktop and mobile placements:

    • 300 x 250
    • 336 x 280
    • 728 x 90
    • 160 x 600
    • 300 x 600
    • 320 x 50
    • 320 x 100

The 300 x 250 medium rectangle is generally the strongest all-around starting point because of its flexibility across devices and placements.

For maximum reach, however, responsive display ads are usually the better foundation because Google can automatically adapt your assets to available inventory.

    Responsive Display Ad Asset Specs

If you use responsive display ads, you do not need to manually create every banner dimension.

Instead, you provide Google with high-quality assets in several aspect ratios.

Google's official responsive display ad specifications currently recommend the following.

    Landscape Image

    Aspect ratio: 1.91:1
    Recommended size: 1200 x 628 pixels
    Minimum size: 600 x 314 pixels

    Square Image

    Aspect ratio: 1:1
    Recommended size: 1200 x 1200 pixels
    Minimum size: 300 x 300 pixels

Google allows multiple images and recommends supplying several strong variations so its system has more creative combinations to work with.

    Responsive Display Ad Logo Specs

Logos can also be provided in square and landscape formats.

    Square Logo

    Aspect ratio: 1:1
    Recommended size: 1200 x 1200 pixels
    Minimum size: 128 x 128 pixels

    Landscape Logo

    Aspect ratio: 4:1
    Recommended size: 1200 x 300 pixels
    Minimum size: 512 x 128 pixels

Although logos are strongly recommended for branding, Google's current responsive display specifications do not require a logo asset in order to create the ad.

    Responsive Display Ad Text Specs

The creative is not limited to images.

For each responsive display ad, Google allows:

    • Up to 5 short headlines of 30 characters each
    • 1 long headline of up to 90 characters
    • Up to 5 descriptions of 90 characters each
    • A business name of up to 25 characters

Supplying multiple high-quality variations gives Google's system more combinations to test for different audiences and placements.

    File Formats and Size Limits

File requirements differ between responsive assets and uploaded display banners.

    Responsive Display Images

Responsive display images can be uploaded in common image formats such as JPG and PNG.

Google currently allows image assets of up to approximately 5 MB per image, giving advertisers much more room to upload high-resolution creative.

    Uploaded Image Ads

For uploaded fixed-size image ads, Google currently supports:

    • GIF
    • JPG
    • PNG

The maximum file size is 150 KB.

Animated GIFs can run for up to 30 seconds and must stop after that duration, even if the animation loops.

    HTML5 Display Ads

Google also supports HTML5 display ads, which can provide more sophisticated animation and interactive creative.

These ads can be built using tools such as Google Web Designer and uploaded to Google Ads as ZIP files, subject to Google's HTML5 eligibility and technical requirements.

How to Make Google Display Ads Perform Better

Choosing the right size gets your ad into more auctions. Creative quality determines whether people actually notice and engage with it.

Several principles can improve display advertising performance.

    Fight Banner Blindness

Users are exposed to enormous numbers of ads online, so generic banner designs are easy to ignore.

    Use:

    • Clean layouts
    • Strong visual hierarchy
    • High-quality imagery
    • Clear contrast
    • Simple messaging

The goal is to attract attention without making the creative cluttered or difficult to understand.

    Keep Image Text Minimal

Avoid filling your images with headlines, logos, buttons, and other text elements that Google can already add dynamically.

Google's display creative best practices recommend using clear, high-quality images while avoiding excessive overlaid text, collages, and unnecessary blank space.

This is particularly important for responsive display ads because the same image may appear in many different layouts.

Use One Clear Call to Action

Users should immediately understand what you want them to do next.

Depending on the campaign, that could include:

    • Shop Now
    • Learn More
    • Request a Quote
    • Book Now
    • Get Started
    • Contact Us

Avoid competing calls to action within the same creative.

    Stay Consistent With Your Brand

    Use consistent:

    • Colors
    • Fonts
    • Logos
    • Photography
    • Messaging
    • Tone

Display campaigns often expose users to your brand multiple times before they convert, so consistent branding helps build recognition.

Use Display for Awareness and Remarketing

Display advertising often plays a different role than Search advertising.

Search campaigns capture users actively looking for a product or service. Display campaigns can help introduce your brand earlier in the buying process or reconnect with users who already know you.

Remarketing can be particularly valuable for bringing previous visitors back to your website after they leave without converting.

Responsive Display Ads vs. Uploaded Display Ads

Neither format needs to completely replace the other.

Responsive display ads are usually best when you want:

    • Maximum reach
    • Automatic resizing
    • More placement flexibility
    • Automated creative combinations
    • Easier campaign management

Uploaded display ads are useful when you need:

    • Precise creative control
    • Specific banner dimensions
    • Strict branding
    • Custom animation
    • HTML5 functionality

Many campaigns can use a combination of both formats.

Google has reported that advertisers using responsive display ads alongside uploaded image ads can achieve broader performance opportunities than relying solely on uploaded images.

What Is the Best Google Display Ad Size?

For fixed-size uploaded ads, the 300 x 250 medium rectangle is one of the best starting points because it works across a broad range of desktop and mobile placements.

However, there is no single display ad dimension that guarantees the best performance.

    The right mix depends on:

    • Where your audience browses
    • Device usage
    • Available inventory
    • Campaign objectives
    • Creative quality
    • Targeting
    • Bidding strategy

If your main objective is maximum coverage, responsive display ads generally provide more flexibility than trying to manually create every possible banner dimension.
